Hardware Reviews - GeneralHow we test Updated for tests after 4/00 For hardware review tests that don't fall into our primary categories (Ethernet, wireless, phone wire and AC wire), we use the following standardized procedures. At this point, this "general" category has only encompassed USB kits, but we may add others later. For evaluations and reviews of USB kits, we use two test machines as detailed below. Both machines use a clean install of the original Windows 98. We install the operating system clean for every new test and have no other software or peripherals installed other than what you see listed. After setting up the hardware for each test, we set up the software using the install routines included and outlined with the kits. We realize that not using the same protocols may provide some speed advantages for some kits over others, but it is essential that we use the install procedures as developed by the manufacturers. For the actual tests, we use a 30-meg file or 4-meg file and copy it from one machine to the other. For lack of a better term we call each test a read or a write. The read is copying the 30-meg file from T400 to T266.The write is copying the file from T266 to T400. Both reads and writes are controlled from T400. Our test machines We have two machines set up to help us install, set up and test hardware and software products of interest to home PC networkers. Test Machine 1 -- "T400 " Test Machine 2 -- "T266 "
